Can you believe 2014 is just around the corner? While you may be getting ready to toast to the new year, before the clock strikes 12, you should be evaluating your job search and making some necessary tweaks.

I know what you’re thinking. The end of the year isn’t for business, it’s for fun. Though this is most certainly true, it’s also a time for reflection, growth, and analyzing your professional journey. Understanding what’s worked this year and what needs to be improved is going to take your job search to the next level.

With that in mind, take control of your job search in 2014 by adjusting a few elements before years’ end:

Create a better job search plan

Your job search plan is incredibly important. Without one that matches your goals, passions, desired organizations, and next steps, you face disorganization and the potential for missed opportunities. Creating a better job search plan not only gives you insight into the positions you’ve search and applied for, it also directs you towards next steps.

Tip: Use tools like CareerShift, which can help you to find the right contact information, store correspondence, and manage your search a little better.

Revamp your resume

If you’ve been searching this year and haven’t had much luck, it may be time to revamp your resume. Studies show that recruiters receive about 250 resumes per job opening and spend less than 10 seconds reviewing each one. If your resume doesn’t stand out or is not relevant to the position, you likely won’t get a call.

Tip: Apart from design, be sure to include industry keywords, specific duties listed in the job description, and relevant past experience. Since many employers use tools like Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), the chances that your resume will be noticed increase if you use the right content.

Gain those connections

Connections can make or break your job search. Since the majority of positions are filled by referrals, it’s in your best interest to do some networking. Find those hidden connections that can help you to secure the job of your dreams. While relationships should always be mutually beneficial, having someone on the inside can definitely increase your chances at getting the job.

Tip: If you want to gain the knowledge of someone influential, engage with them on social media, volunteer your services, and regularly check-in. This shows what you can do for them, opening the lines of communication and illustrating why you’re a great professional.

Know your rights

Whether it’s how much salary you deserve, the benefits you should receive, or even protection against discrimination, it’s important to understand your rights as a job seeker and future employee. This may not be something you’re concerned about, but being knowledgeable about your rights can improve your way of life, both personally and professionally.

Tip: Do your research and know what to expect out of future employers and what shouldn’t be accepted under any circumstances. This will help you to be aware of any odd behavior, should you ever be faced with it.

While 2013 is almost over, there’s still time to get your bearings for the new year. Do a little homework in order to take control of your job search. Hopefully it will make for a truly happy new year.

What do you think? What are some other things job seekers need to do before the new year?
