Let’s face it, almost every individual wants to land their dream job. Unfortunately, only 14 percent of Americans say they’re in their dream careers.

When it comes to landing the job you’ve always wanted, you can’t rely on your resume and cover letter to do the work for you. Landing a dream job requires patience, persistence, and even a little sweat and tears.

If you’ve found a dream job opening or you’re trying to launch your dream career, here are five steps to landing the job you really want:

1. Create a clear goal for yourself.

Knowing exactly what you want out of your job search will play a huge factor in landing a job. This means creating a crystal clear picture of your career goals, who you want to be, and where you see yourself working.

As you think about your dream job, think about the responsibilities you want to have and the experience you want to gain. This will help you find job openings that meet your needs.

2. Build relationships with the right people.

The key to landing a job you want is impressing the right people. Although human resources will be the first department you encounter as you contact employers, trying connecting with the people who will have a direct impact on the hiring decisions for your position.

After doing some research about the employer, find out the key roles are in the department where the job opening is advertised. You can also connect with people in your ideal department or who have previously worked for the company. These connections will allow you to get an inside scoop of the company and better prepare yourself for the application process.

3. Don’t brag about yourself.

All job seekers know they must sell their skills and experience to employers, however, it’s important to not come off as arrogant or cocky. Research shows 75 percent of job seekers feel their skills exceed those of an entry-level job. Regardless of how confident you feel about the position, remember the employer has the final say in your hiring.

To sell yourself to employers without sounding cocky, there are a few things you can do. First, show the employer what you can do for their company by sharing your accomplishment stories. You can also talk about the lessons you’ve learned and how those experiences prepared you for the position.

In addition to talking about your experience, explain to the employer why you’re interested in their company. Finding a balance between marketing yourself and talking about the organization will help you during the application process.

4. Don’t hesitate to ask for help.

There will be moments in your job search where you feel lost or confused. If you feel like your goals are out of whack or you want to give up on your search, reach out to a mentor or friend. Sometimes, talking it out can iron out the kinks in your job search. Plus, you can receive valuable input that can improve your job search strategy.

5. Be persistent and proactive.

The only way you’re going to land a job is if you truly want it. Sure, while you can send 50 to 100 resumes each week to employers, this isn’t the best way to make a noticeable impact and land your dream job.

Being persistent and proactive means continuously following the tips mentioned above. If you’re going to go anywhere with your job search, you need to be on top of your game, network, and find fresh ways to market yourself. Employers don’t have time to look at every application that comes across their desk. However, if you consistently follow up and bring your talents to their attention, you’ll be more likely to land an interview.

Landing the job you want doesn’t have to be as hard as you think. Just follow these steps and you’ll be on your way to the job you’ve always wanted.
