The importance of making sure resumes have the right keywords embedded in them plays a key role in getting the employers attention. Many employers require resume submission to be emailed, enabling them to automatically process the large number of received resumes. Their applicant tracking system is looking for keywords within the resumes to pick out more closely matched candidates. Students can benefit from a few tips on how to make sure their resumes contain keywords that the employer is looking for. Look at the job posting. Employers are using keywords to draw you to their posting, so look closely at the keywords they are using, whether they are skills, industry terms or buzzwords, and technical terms. Ideally, use these keywords, if appropriate, in your experience or education section. They can also be added in a skills section. Your resume now stands a better chance of being recognized as a preferred candidate in this prequalifying process. This is an important exercise to understand and utilize. Resumes are going to be part of resume databases and employer applicant tracking systems (ATS). Both are keyword based. CareerShift provides a way for students to create, upload, and store as many different versions of resumes and cover letters as needed. The ability for you to select specific documents to send to specific contacts is another way that CareerShift is helping students be successful in their job search process.
